Need Help Authentication loses HttpContext?

We have both a custom data extension and a custom authentication extension for Reporting Services 2000.

Reports with one dataset work great, but reports with more than one dataset fail because the Authentication extension call GetUserInfo no longer has an HttpContext when the second dataset calls into it.

I've seen several people post this same problem on other forums but no answers. Documentation of an msdn article states "the security extension will always be loaded in the Report Server app domain" so I don't understand how we could lose the context.

Additionally, ALL samples of an authentication extension I've looked at have GetUserInfo coded the same way:

Code Snippet

Public Sub GetUserInfo(ByRef userIdentity As System.Security.Principal.IIdentity, ByRef userId As System.IntPtr) Implements Microsoft.ReportingServices.Interfaces.IAuthenticationExtension.GetUserInfo

If Not System.Web.HttpContext.Current Is Nothing _

AndAlso Not System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User Is Nothing Then

userIdentity = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity

Else

userIdentity = Nothing

End If

userId = IntPtr.Zero

End Sub

Any help or insights would be GREATLY appreciated - thanks, Ken.

OK, Wanted to share what I have found after opening a ticket with MS.

What we wanted to accomplish:
To dynamically change our connection string per userID so we could hit multiple instances of the same database structure. We did this by using the UserID stored in the HTTPContext. However, multiple datasets in a report caused Reportings Services to spawn new threads to access the data and RS did not persist the HTTPContext to these threads.

The GetUserInfo problem was a red herring- this did indeed always have access to the HTTPContext which was part of our Authentication extension. The Data extension was the real problem as we didn't have the HTTPContext during creation of our Connection object. What we found out from MS is that Reporting Services doesn't guarantee calls to be made on the asp.net worker thread and indeed in some instances even reports with one dataset failed.

Workaround:

Reports build with RS have access to a global variable UserID - this is actually retrieved from either WindowsIndentity or FormsIdentity based on authentication. Thus I added a report parameter UserID with a non-queried default value of =User!UserID to each report, and then created a parameter @.UserID for every dataset with the value of =Parameters!UserID.Value.

In the connection object if I don't have my HTTPContext, I default to a known database so the code doesn't fail. Then in the Command object's execute reader, I loop through the parameters until I find @.UserID. I now can recreate my connection object based on the UserID and set this connection as my Command's connection and return the datareader from the correct database. I make sure the connection is closed by always specifying the CloseConnection behavior during the datareader creation.

Whew!!! A bit cheesy, but it is allowing us to do what we need. Hopefully this will help anyone else that needs it.

need expression help/guidance

Do all expressions have to be on one line?
Can you declare variables in them like in Crystal Reports Formulas?
Can you use other formulas as values? As in you set up a textbox that
will give you a value with an expression, then in another expression
you reference the value of that text box?
Is there a decent guide out there for expressions? Why
can'texpressions just behave similar to a function?
The answers to this post will certainly help determine whether or not
we stick with Crystal or go with this. You can use GlobalVariables in RS :
In Report Properties, go in Custom Code and Declare typed Variables
Exemple : Public Test As String = "100"
You can reference this variables in any expression in your report :
=Code.Test
In any expression formula you can call Custom Code variables or functions.
As well as reference other Report Items:
=ReportItems!textbox4.Value (to use a textbox named textbox4 value).
Let me know if this helps.

Need code examples of how to call SSRS reports from winforms app

I'm writing a vb.net winforms app and need to call up reports from SSRS. I
also need to pass in secure parameters into the report and I don't want to
pass the credentials if I don't have to. I was hoping I could call my own
web service where I can pass encrypted data to my web service which would
contain the parameters. then a business object on the server could generate
the credential needed by SSRS and pass both the credentials and decrypted
parameters into the report. Problem is I don't know how to get the report
back to the client. One idea was to render the report on the server side
and then convert its html into a byte stream and pass the byte stream as a
return value for my web service. Then my winform client could convert the
byte stream into an html document. However, I have no idea if this is
possible and need examples for the various parts.
can someone please give me advise (and preferable links to code examples) on
how to solve this problem?
Thanks.

Need better workaround for hidden prompt without read-only behavior

I have many reports that have a parameter in them which I want to default to NULL and not show (plus other parameters I do want to show). If I leave the prompt field empty, I get the read-only error. The workaround has been to have the prompt field contain a single space, which works well as far as producing the behavior I want. However, every time you open the report in the designer, it automatically removes the space. What is a better solution?

When you clear the prompt string in Report Manager, make sure you do not check the prompt user flag.

The parameter values in the server override the designer parameter values. So even though the prompt string is back, it will still be hidden on the server.

In SQL 2005, we have made this behavor more clear.

|||I am not clearing the prompt string in Report Manager, I am doing so in the designer. These are reports that get installed at customer production sites by basically importing the rdl through a utility built into our software. I do not have access to maintaining the reports through report manager. Any suggestions?|||You would need to write in your iinstallation script that published the report to clear out the prompt string. The call is SetReportParameters.

Again, this is an RDL property in SQL 2005.sql

Need advise on SSIS?

I am very new in SSIS. I have the Report Server set up with two dozen of the OLAP reports in it. The reports are connected to the OLAP database on a seperate computer running on Sql 2005 server and the data source for the OLAP DB is pointed to the warehouse database on another computer running on Sql 2000 server. The warehouse server updates daily from a number of "Production" Sql servers running on Sql 6.5 and Sql 7.0 with the legacy front-end data entry application. I know the update from the "Production" Sql 6.5/7.0 servers to the warehouse server complete around 9am in the morning everyday. How do I set up a package in SSIS to schedule the update of the OLAP database say 9:30am so that end-user can have the latest data to their report. The OLAP database has one fact table, half a dozen of cubes and ten dimensions. I know it is not an easy task to set up the package in SSIS. Please provide sample and step on how to do this. Thanks. One last question how to prevent/warn users from opening the report when SSIS updating the OLAP database?

Wow! that is 'whole project' question.

I recommend you to read about the REAL project, which offers a end-to-end BI implementation using SQL Server 2005 (including SSIS)

The ORDER BY clause should appear only once, at the very end. And I would not enclose column names in single quotes. And, you will likely need to ORDER BY 4 (that is, refer to the sorting column by position, not by the alias you are giving it).

navigation question

hi all,
i need to add a BACK button to some reports.

I have a report that has a hyperlink to another report. When I click it, I go to that other report, but because I cannot open it into a new page, I got to be able to return somehow to the initial page. In this second report I added a row, I have embedded the picture of a button that reads GOBACK, but for the Navigation property I do not know how to specify navigation to the previous page.

Anybody, any ideas?
thanks,
kowalskyTry javascript:history.go(-1) for a url-based parameter|||Thanks for the tip.

Could you be a littel more specific, though? I don't understand what you mean: what is the synthax for the javascript code? where do i create the url-based parameter?
Right now my second report is already based on a parameter (but this doen't help).
The place where I should try to insert the javascript is probably the Hyperlink action section in the Navigation tab in the button's properties.
Am I close?

Thanks,
kowalsky|||Hi kowalsky,
I haven't tested this, but you should be able to create a new textbox, and under advanced properties add the javascript in the URL navigation section. It should be something like javascript:history.go(-1) to go back a page.
Another solution may be to create a bookmark link with a reference to the page number property.

Navigation of reports

Is it possible to use tree view to display all available reports.
Is it possible to navigate to another report on click event of tree node.Hi,
It is not available, but you can make it using some technique. i.e you can
simulate the tree view using the catalog table where table names are stored
and give an "Action" for jumping to other reports.

names.
then on the report layout you can use "action" from the properties of the
table cell.
give "Jump to report". Ofcourse lot of formatting should be done for tree
view.

Navigation not working after clicking once

We open reports in new window from an asp.net page..using rs.render method.
Recently we have new reports with graphs...when clicked on detail for graph
I have to open another report detail in a new window. I have created a
link(naviagtion URL property for textbox ) in the main graph report to open
the detail report link as
="javascript:void(document.open('/ReportViewer/ReportFrame.aspx?rptPath=REPORTPATH&args="
& REPORTPARAMETERES &
"','_blank','left=50,top=50,width=800,height=580,menubar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=Yes,status=yes,toolbar=0'))"
Issue 1 :
The link is working fine for the first time. When I click the link for the
first time...the new window opens fine with the detail report...but when i
close the new window(detail report) and click the link nothing happens,no
report open..why. Also if i keep the new window(of detail report) as is
without closing and then click on the link again in the graph report...one
more new window opens up with the detail report...
Why does the link not work when i close the new window and re-click the link
Issue 2 :
I am trying this...
The window we open the report in contains frames..and we open the report in
the lower frame...how can i get the new detail report to open in the same
frame.
I tried using '_self'...but with this the new detail report is open on the
main IE page where our actual application is been open.
Any suggestions to get it working as I wish it tooo...would help.
Thanks.
SKI am still stuck on this...
I am doubting this is some kind of setting issue or what
I changed the URL link to simple
= "javascript:void(window.open('http://www.google.com','_blank'))"
even this ...when i open it for the first time it works fine...but when i
close the new window the link does not work anymore...
fyi : we are deploying the reports in PDF format...any issue with adobe !!!
I get a security warning saying document is trying to open a link...but
nothing opens after the firsttime '
any ideas....

It sounds kind-of-like your browser settings are not allowing pop-
ups.
Regards,
Enrique Martinez
Sr. Software Consultant|||Thanks EMartinez for the reply...
But no I have tried that...by allowing any popups...
It seems really strange...I think it has something to do with adobe
reader...no idea what?
The link opens fine for the first time...the second time i click ..nothing
happens except i get the security errror from adobe reader saying the
document is trying to open the link bla bla. The link works fine when the
window opened the first time is kept open!Whyyyyy

Navigation is not working correctly when I apply security on RS.

The site is working, all of the reports run, but all of the navigation drops
the https navigation to http links which will not render the application.
Does anyone know where I missed the https to configure as a secure
application? This is everything in my navigation
Home | My Subscriptions | Site Settings | Help
and if I go to the subfolders the home link for the subfolders does it too..
Any help will be nice!!

Navigation buttons Dimmed

Anyone know why my navigation buttons on my reports is always dimmed so that I can only see the very first page of every report? I even spent some time with a Microsoft SQL Server engineer trying to figure this one out and he wasn't able to figure out why?

I tried to attach a picture but I guess pictures aren't allowed. The first page, previous page, next page and last page buttons displayed as arrows on the top left of the reports are always dimmed on every report even though they have multiple pages.

Has this happened to anyone and how did you get it fixed?

Thanks

Anybody?|||

Hello,

Between the navigation buttons, does it show "1 of 1", or does it show the actual page count for the second number? Can you manually type in another page number and navigate that way?

It's completely dimmed. In other words, I can't even type in a page number. It says "of 0". To make it even more interesting, if I go to the report from http://machineName/reportserver instead of http://machineName/reports; it works fine. There are 44 pages.

This has got me completely baffled.

|||Bump. I guess I'm going to have to use another of my MSDN phone incidences? I guess no one else has run into this problem?
