Need Help Authentication loses HttpContext?

We have both a custom data extension and a custom authentication extension for Reporting Services 2000.

Reports with one dataset work great, but reports with more than one dataset fail because the Authentication extension call GetUserInfo no longer has an HttpContext when the second dataset calls into it.

I've seen several people post this same problem on other forums but no answers. Documentation of an msdn article states "the security extension will always be loaded in the Report Server app domain" so I don't understand how we could lose the context.

Additionally, ALL samples of an authentication extension I've looked at have GetUserInfo coded the same way:

Code Snippet

Public Sub GetUserInfo(ByRef userIdentity As System.Security.Principal.IIdentity, ByRef userId As System.IntPtr) Implements Microsoft.ReportingServices.Interfaces.IAuthenticationExtension.GetUserInfo

If Not System.Web.HttpContext.Current Is Nothing _

AndAlso Not System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User Is Nothing Then

userIdentity = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity

Else

userIdentity = Nothing

End If

userId = IntPtr.Zero

End Sub

Any help or insights would be GREATLY appreciated - thanks, Ken.

OK, Wanted to share what I have found after opening a ticket with MS.

What we wanted to accomplish:
To dynamically change our connection string per userID so we could hit multiple instances of the same database structure. We did this by using the UserID stored in the HTTPContext. However, multiple datasets in a report caused Reportings Services to spawn new threads to access the data and RS did not persist the HTTPContext to these threads.

The GetUserInfo problem was a red herring- this did indeed always have access to the HTTPContext which was part of our Authentication extension. The Data extension was the real problem as we didn't have the HTTPContext during creation of our Connection object. What we found out from MS is that Reporting Services doesn't guarantee calls to be made on the asp.net worker thread and indeed in some instances even reports with one dataset failed.

Workaround:

Reports build with RS have access to a global variable UserID - this is actually retrieved from either WindowsIndentity or FormsIdentity based on authentication. Thus I added a report parameter UserID with a non-queried default value of =User!UserID to each report, and then created a parameter @.UserID for every dataset with the value of =Parameters!UserID.Value.

In the connection object if I don't have my HTTPContext, I default to a known database so the code doesn't fail. Then in the Command object's execute reader, I loop through the parameters until I find @.UserID. I now can recreate my connection object based on the UserID and set this connection as my Command's connection and return the datareader from the correct database. I make sure the connection is closed by always specifying the CloseConnection behavior during the datareader creation.

Whew!!! A bit cheesy, but it is allowing us to do what we need. Hopefully this will help anyone else that needs it.

You might want to check the Virtual Directories and see if the
permissions are set to anonymous. To do this, right-click My Computer

Need DW/AS Evangelism information

I have recently created cubes using the company I work
for data. I would like to switch form using Crystal
Reports to using AS and Reporting Services.
However I am not the greatest public speaker. Does anyone
know where I can find a few good web pages that will help
to convince my bosses that using AS is the way to go as
well as Reporting Services. In other words I need to
become a Data Warehouse Evangelist.
Can I get an Amen from the congregation.
(the following questions can be asked by your "opponents")
Why do you want to change a working technology in your company?
if CR is used and works fine, why changing to a new technology?
What are the costs advantages?
What we can't do today and we will do with a DW?
Using a reporting solution does not need datawarehouse, today a lot of
reports can be generated directly from an operationnal system. So if you ask
for a datawarehouse solution, is that because you want to provide more power
and new features to your users, so its a good argument for you.
Providing ad-hoc analysis features is a good point which required a
datawarehouse. And using this datawarehouse for the end users reports is
important to make sure that everyone will see the same cleansed information.
But does your user really need ad-hoc access?
If a user open 1 report by month, too bad. If a user asked you for a new
report every day, you have found the solution.
Crystal report cannot be compared to analysis services and a datawarehouse
solution!
So switching from a simple reporting solution to an ad-hoc query solution
based on OLAP cubes + reports is not allways simple. You'll win only if your
boss need to have answers to questions and if today these answers takes a
long process.
No added value, you'll loose.
Find a guy who need this type of solution in your company (like a HR analyst
or financial manager...) and this person will help you to promote your idea.
No sponsor, no success.
From my experience, if you found a process improoved by a datwarehouse
solution, you win.
In my job, I have reduced the time to create the budget from 2 months to
1week.
I have provided near real time access to information only available only 1
time a day before, and with a higher data quality (in a manufacturing
company).
In another hand, I have projects failure: too complex system not used by the
end user is the first reason. Data not needed by the end user in the
datawarehouse. Bad change management following the project=not used project.
Be prepared for a lot of questions is your better way to win.
Propose a prototype is also a good way to convince you boss, if they can
compare the old and new version of their job, they promote you :-)

Need basic help with deployment

Hello

I feel like an idiot here, but I cannot figure out how to get Reporting Services to work outside of Visual Studio. I have everything installed (using SQL Server 2005 Express), I have a report, it deploys but when I go to view it, I'm asked for a username and password. I found out how to allow annymous login, but when I do that it says I do not have permissions to access the report on the localhost server.

I can view the report through Visual Studio just fine, but not outside of it.

How can I get it to just allow me to view the report without logging in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-JimWell it turns out the problem was that my default browser is firefox, and so it would deploy and try to open it that way and it wouldnt work. If I open it in IE its just fine, go figure :-\sql

Need assistance

Am a newbie to SQL QUERIES (reporting) - Please assist
Scenario:
I have a simple table where I have columns like
empno
empname
latedate
reasonlate
justification
This table contains mulitple data for a single empno as you can see the
structure
for eg:
empno empname latedate reasonlate justification
101 Kevin 10/1/2005 Business Training day 1
101 Kevin 10/2/2005 Business Training day 2
101 Kevin 10/3/2005 Business Training day 3
103 Tracy 10/1/2005 Personal Sick
103 Tracy 10/3/2005 Business Seminar
...
...
I need to have a report like
Kevin (101)
10/1/2005 Business Training day 1
10/2/2005 Business Training day 2
10/3/2005 Business Training day 3
Tracy
10/1/2005 Personal Sick
10/3/2005 Business Seminar
FYI: I also have another table as EmpMaster with empno and name, so
that I can fetch those data from there.
Someone please assist me in preparing this report
Thankyou in advance
Best Regards
ShaninThis script returns data for a specified employee:
declare @.emp_name <datatype>
set @.emp_name = 'Kevin'
select latedate
,reasonlate
,justification
from dbo.EmpMaster
inner join <other_table>
on <other_table>.empno = dbo.EmpMaster.empno
where (dbo.EmpMaster.empname = @.emp_name)
You could design a procedure based on the query above.
To help you find a better solution we'd need to see DDL, more sample data
and preferably a more elaborate description of expected results.
ML|||Thank you ML for the reply
I actually need to use this script in an ASP file and generate a
report, I will not be able use hard coding, should be dynamic.
I forgot to provide the information that the core data is in a table
called HRDATA where I have those columns
empno
empname
latedate
reasonlate
justification
and have another master table viz. EmpMaster just in case we need to
join or fetch empno and empname alone
By the way what's DDL ?
Regards
Shanin|||DDL = Data Definition Language
For relevant info, please see:
http://www.aspfaq.com/etiquette.asp?id=5006
If you need to access data from a web page, then using a stored procedure is
the best way to do it. The procedure itself may not be dynamic, but the
purpose it serves is far from being "hard coded".
After you provide us with better specifications, we can help you design a
better solution.
Maybe this might also be a genuine opportunity to wipe the dust from your
copy of Books Online. :)
ML|||The specification was the one I provided above, ok let me be more
precise
I have a table viz. HRDATA andthe columns to be considered from this
are
empno - float(8)
empname - varchar(50)
loccode - varchar(50)
latedate - datetime
reasonlate-varchar(100)
justification-varchar(900)
approved-numeric(9)
now each time a employee submits his data from a ASP web form for a
certain date, a record is created in this table, hence for each date he
is late or absent he shall submit his justification, and hence the
records are like below
empno empname loccode latedate reasonlate justification
approved
101 Kevin JJ 10/1/2005 Business Training
day 1 1
101 Kevin JJ 10/2/2005 Business Training
day 2 1
101 Kevin JJ 10/3/2005 Business Training
day 3 1
103 Tracy OL 10/1/2005 Personal Sick
2
103 Tracy OL 10/3/2005 Business Seminar
1
now the HR Manager needs a report like the one below, grouped by
Empname, number and loccode
Kevin (101) - JJ
10/1/2005 Business Training day 1
10/2/2005 Business Training day 2
10/3/2005 Business Training day 3
Tracy (103) - OL
10/1/2005 Personal Sick
10/3/2005 Business Seminar
I have another master table viz. EmpMaster where I have all the
employees name, no, and loccode. Hope am repeating what I said in my
first post.
Ths is the actual scenario, I guess it's very simple for SQL GURUS..
Regards
Shanin|||Thankx guys, I have made it possible through ASP coding itself.
Regards
Shanin|||> now the HR Manager needs a report like the one below, grouped by
> Empname, number and loccode
The query below will provide the needed data. However, the grouping in your
specification is really report formatting (i.e. group section headers) and
is beyond the scope of SQL. The particulars depend on your reporting tool.
SELECT
empno,
empname,
loccode,
latedate,
reasonlate,
justification
FROM HRDATA
ORDER BY
empname,
empno,
loccode
The EmpMaster table isn't needed since HRDATA contains the required info.
In fact, redundant non-key data like empname is a big red flag in a
relational database. There are some cases where redundancy is deliberately
introduced but I get the feeling that poor design is the case here. Which
name would your HR Manager expect when you have different names in both
tables for the same employee (empno)?
In the future, please include the DDL scripts and sample data like the
following. Many of your fellow SQL Server community members will take the
time to develop and test a solution to your problem. Scripts eliminate
ambiguity and is quite time consuming to construct these scripts from
narrative.
CREATE TABLE HRDATA
(
empno float(8),
empname varchar(50),
loccode varchar(50),
latedate datetime,
reasonlate varchar(100),
justification varchar(900),
approved numeric(9)
)
INSERT INTO HRDATA VALUES
(101, 'Kevin', 'JJ', '10/1/2005', 'Business', 'Training day 1', 1)
INSERT INTO HRDATA VALUES
(101, 'Kevin', 'JJ', '10/2/2005', 'Business', 'Training day 2', 1)
INSERT INTO HRDATA VALUES
(101, 'Kevin', 'JJ', '10/3/2005', 'Business', 'Training day 3', 1)
INSERT INTO HRDATA VALUES
(103, 'Tracy', 'OL', '10/1/2005', 'Personal', 'Sick', 2)
INSERT INTO HRDATA VALUES
(103, 'Tracy', 'OL', '10/3/2005', 'Business', 'Seminar', 1)
Hope this helps.

Need an expert advice

Hi,
we have a legacy database on a UNIX box for our production system (OLTP).
This is the only database used for both OLTP and custom reporting. The
database is now hugh and reporting is very limited as well as slow
processing. When certain reports are run the users have latency in inputing
data.
I am thinking of importing some of the tables nightly to SQL Server and
then creating come cubes for reports. The issues I have are:
1. All of the tables in the UNIX box doesn't have timestamp so there is no
way of improting changed data and it database doesn't support replication so
I'll have to import the entire table(s) nightly. Would this affect my cubes?
2. Would it be better to import the data to a separate server (staging) and
then import the data from the second server to a third serer running MSAS?
3. One of the table is an Archive table where all settled sales are
transferred to, however, due to the nature of our business and the current
system design, some users go back and edit previous data so if i run a report
now (for let's say sept last year) I see sales as 2.00 dollars and later
today I see sales as 2.50. There is no way of knowing which row was changed.
So if I import the data to create a cube can I then snapshot that cube since
I'll be importing the antire "Archive" table nightly. I know it sounds
screwed up but it's what I have to work with. Or how can I solve this.
Thanks

Even with the reporting load moved to a different server, if the OLTP server
continues to accumulate massive amounts of transactions, the duration of
simple primary key lookups will eventually not meet the user's performance
expectations. In addition to replicating data for reporting purposes, you
may want to have a daily or monthly process that archives unneeded
historical transactions from the OLTP system to an Operational Data Store
(ODS) database (not necessarily a seperate server). If needed, you can still
give the operational applications query access to this data by implementing
partitioned views.

With no timestamp of any kind, then standard replication is not an option.
You can add a trigger to log insert / update / deletes on the OLTP system to
seperate tables (perhaps only storing IDs of rows that were modified), and
implement a DTS package that copies over the needed data based on this
information from this log.

See the above reccomendation for an ODS database. For performance reasons,
it would be best to have this on a dedicated server, but it could be located
on the OLTP or MSAS server.

That's another reason for the logging trigger mentioned above; it also
audits changes on these OLTP tables. Also, useful in the log tables would be
a datetime column to keep track of when the changes took place.

The audit log tables on the OLTP system can keep a history of data
modifications to settled sales, and I assume this event would be occasional
and not too frequent. Also, the MSAS cubes can be archived (just like SQL
Server databases), things like Excel pivot tables can be archived, and
reports can be printed as archivable PDF documents.

what is your RDBMS on this server?
servers like Oracle can create a simple flatfile which contains all the
transaction made against a table;
there is no timestamp, but can you create triggers in your database?

Well, situation normal....starting point is to look at the business
from a business perspective and determine if there is value in going
the data warehouse route or if all that is warranted from a
profitability point of view is operational reporting on another
database image.
In most businesses today a data warehouse is well justified based on
profit contribution.
If you go the DW route you will need to get to incremental
extracts...if the operational system does not have the ability to
provide them (due to appaulingly limited design in this day and age)
then you must generate them. My company provides free tools to do this.
Then you are on the road to doing 'Business Intelligence' and there is
quite a learning curve. You can choose to 'go it alone' or hire in a
partner to assist. Of course, as a long term BI consultant I would
land on the side of hiring someone but many companies 'buy the books
and go it alone'... ;-)
I sincerely doubt the most profitable approach is getting one answer at
a time from a forum.

Need Advice/Help on querying a different db

I have 2 different database's on the same server. I'm trying to create a stored proc that resides in Reporting database but queries against the Call database. 4 part naming convention gives me an error of 'invalid object name' What am I forgetting here?My first guess would be that you forgot how to spell the object name. The next guess would be that you are doing something that doesn't make sense, like SELECT * FROM myStoredProcedure or the equivalent.

-PatP|||stored procedure lies in ABC4_Dev1_Reporting
Data resides in ABC_Dev1_Call1

From Reporting db in query analyzer I cannot get the following query to run

select * from dbo.ABC_Dev1_Call1.Call (Call is the table)

What am I missing?
Thanks in advance!|||Ah, a snippet of code is worth a thousand words of description! I'd use:SELECT *

You threw me with the 4 part naming convention....

Need Advice on Reporting, End User Query and Data warehousing Tools

Hi:
I need an advice on Reporting, End User Query and Data warehousing
Tools
Below is my customer requirement:
Reporting:
- Flexible Reporting and Web Publishing
- Development and / or customization of reports by systems users using
a GUI based reports designer
- Export Capability to Office Automation Software
- Charting Facility
- Browser-Based User Interface
End User Query:
- Export Capability to Office Automation Software
- Web Publishing Output
- Charting Facility
- Reporting Facility
- Browser-Based User Interface
- Performance Monitoring/Tracking
- Administration
- Row and Column Level Security
Data warehouse:
- ETL and Analyst Tools
SQL2005 Enterprise, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS and Report Builder seem to meet
the requirement, but the problem is the target database is Oracle10g,
can i use those services on Oracle database ?
How about the solution from BusinessObject and Microstrategy, compare
with the services from SQL2005 Enterprise ?
Please Help.
Thanks
JCvoonHi
Reporting Services will certainly cover all your reporting needs including
the automatic generation and delivery that you have specified. You may want
to read the articles at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/default.mspx if you have
not already. It sounds like you will not be running reports directly of you
Oracle database (which I think is possible although I have no experience of
doing this), but using Analysis Services will eliminate the need query this
data http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/analysis/default.mspx.
An important factor will be a good design of the data warehouse. A poor
design will make reporting significantly more difficult, regardless of the
tool used. After using Business Objects a little I would say that for report
generation I do prefer Reporting Services.
One of the biggest factors may be licencing costs, if you are already a SQL
Server house, you will have not extra licence costs for AS or RS.

Thanks for your reply.
In fact I plan to use the SSRS to generate report from Oracle database,
and use SSIS to build the Oracle data warehouse, for SSRS I think it
shouldn't be a problem, but for SSIS and SSAS I'm not sure.

Need a way to use Windows NT intgrated security between two servers

Reporting Services is on its own Win2k3 server , running a report that
does a query against our Production database using Windows NT
Integrated Security.
The query never returns any data, yet when I run the query in Query
Analyzer it works fine...I have another report that uses "Credentials
stored securely in the report server" and that Query woks fine in RS
and in Query Analyzer...Has anybody found a way to use Windows NT
intgrated security between two servers accessed by IIS.RS is on one
server and the database is another..I don't have a direct answer for you but I have a suggestion. I think that
using the credentials of the calling user to hit the database is a bad idea.
The reason is that you will lose all the benefits of connection pooling. I
suggest having a readonly account that is used for the credentials of the
report. Then you use the role based security (with integrated security) to
only allow access to the reports the user should have. If you have sensitive
data that the user should only be able to see certain data then use the
global variable user!userid either as a query parameter or as a filter
parameter. The end result will be the same but your performance under load
will be much much better.

Need a quick answer about Reporting Services in SQL Server 2005?

Hi all,

I apologize in advance for the lack of homework before posting, but I am just looking for a quick answer, or a quick point in the right direction to figure this out.

I have a developer from an adjacent team that wants to use Reporting Services in a SQL Server 2005 installation.

From what I found online during what I thought was a definitive search yesterday, I gave him the MSDN SQL Server 2005 DVD and told him that Reporting Services is now part of the standard installation. Which is what my brief search yesterday indicated to me.

He did the installation (full, according to him) and said he could not find Reporting Services.

So, the quick question is...

Where is Reporting Services in SQL Server 2005? I don't have a separate MSDN DVD that contains it as was the case on SQL Server 2000. This further supports my (wavering) position that it is part of the standard installation.

Thoughts? Direction? Collective kicks in the posterior?

Thanks!Check services for "SQL Server Reporting Services (instancename)" to see if it is installed AND running. One thing is you can defer the configuration of Reporting Services until after the install. The default is to have the installation do it for you, which your neighbor may have done. If so, check http://hiscomputer/reports to see if anything is there. Oh, and he DID have IIS installed on his machine beforehand, right? It is sort of a requirement.|||Thanks very much for the info, Mr. C!!! I do appreciate it. I assume he has IIS set up, but I will check with him and pass on your other suggestions!

I am just glad to know that I didn't mis-interpret the stuff I found online yesterday, and that I am not then required to go tell him "oh, sorry, I was wrong about it being a part of the standard installation".

I have not yet graduated in my department to the use and care of 2005, but since I am the keeper of the MSDN disks, of course the minions that have actually been allowed to move on to 2005 assume I know all, and see all.

Thanks again very much! I hate asking questions like that when google would probably tell me the answer (feels too much like asking a homework problem), but today is a crazy day on the farm and I just don't have the time today.|||...the minions that have actually been allowed to move on to 2005 assume I know all, and see all.
You have access to this site, and SQLTeam. That makes you better than omniscient ;-).|||Yes, true dat.

And that's why when I forwarded your suggestions to Dude, I simply said "this was posted on a database board in response to my query". Purposely keeping the name of the board hidden safely away in my toolkit.

Knowledge is power, you know.

I would be in good shape if belly fat was also power.|||If he brings up Management Studio (gosh how I hate that thing) and selects Reporting Services instead of Database Engine, he will find it.|||Thanks Tom...info forwarded on to him. Hopefully that will do it for him and I can get back to the fires at hand.

Nearly blank report manager/home page

Hi,
I have just installed Reporting Services for SQL Server 2005. I went through
the configuration tool and everything went smoothly. However... when I
navigate to the report manager (http://MyReportServer/reports) I see the page
OK and the header is all there (i.e. Labels like "SQL Server Reporting
Services" and "Home" and the links for Home, My Subscriptions & Help in the
top RH side) however, there are none of the usual tabs on this main page. I
expect to see "Contents" and other tabs/folders, but they are just not there.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Andrew StanfordI'm also having this issue

It worked fine when I was logged in on the server as admin (someone from
BUILTIN\Administrators )
Opened http://localhost/reports -> Properties tab -> Noted that only the
BUILTIN\Administrators group roles -> Added users with proper roles
Hope this helps,
gummih

Navigation in a Graph

In SQL Reporting Services, i am having a problem with
passing the label value(eg. on x-axis) as a parameter to another report.
So for example, lets say i have the days of the week as my x-axis values in
the graph. Is there any way to allow the user to click on this label
value(eg. monday) which will then pass this as a parameter to another
report?
ThanksNot from labels themselves, but you can do this with data points. Pull up
Chart Properties dialog in report designer -> Values -> Edit -> Action tab.
