need help and advise with database

need help and advise with database...

i am an independant oil and gas consultant and have a fair amount of computer experience but, am lost when it comes to data bases ... i found a database online that contains names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers and email addresses (live links) of companies and people within the oil and gas industry ... i want to be able to utilize this db in excel so i can query and use excels "mail merge" system to send them emails... the db online is in the .php format.

i want to show my appreciation by paying something for this service ... and i will.

i have queried the db online for all entries located within the united states and received over 70,000 entries ... i then copied and pasted them to microsoft word ... it is now 174 pages .. i have it saved to a file ... i can send the file to you.

again, my goal is to use this db in excel. ... please let me know if you might be interested in doing this and if you nedd any additional information.

thx,

jerrywhat u mean to say
u have the usersinformation in word and want to transfer this into
excel or sql
i have not understood make it little bit clear|||Jerry

When you received the records were they in comma separated format (i.e. were the Name, Address, contact, etc all separated with a comma. If they were then just copy the original text file and change the file extension to .csv instead of .txt. Then open the file from excel and save as an excel file.

Need Direction on WHAT to Implement...

Please understand that I am not asking HOW to do something - but, rather, I
just need some advise on what "technology" or method I should employ...
The problem is this:
I have a client for whom I am developing a web site. The client is a bank -
therefore, the entire site will be secure (SSL).
The banks' customers will be entering account number information to the
site - and we will be storing all inputs into a SQL Server database. The SQL
Server database resides on one of OUR servers.
The bank client then wants to periodically download, on demand, the
information that its customers have entered. (And the bank wants to download
the information entered in Excel spreadsheet format.)
I need to determine how I am going to get the entered information from our
ASP.NET server to our SQL Server database in a format that will be
unreadable to us (me, my company).
Likewise, I need to make the information available to the bank to download
in a format that they CAN read.
Where do I start'
I am an experienced, MCSD.NET certified developer - and I can implement
anything.
I just need to know where to begin.
Many thanks for your assistance!

|||You could create a SQL DTS package that would extract the data from SQL and
put it into a new Excel Spreadsheet on demand.
Take a look at some examples out on http://sqldts.com
Then just use SSL between IIS and SQL to protect the data. The data will
not however be encrypted in SQL. You'll need to use third party tools to
do this.

~ Celia ~Celia,
One thought I have on this issue is to ensure the data stored in the SQL
Database is encrypted using a strong encryption package. There are several
good third party applications that can accomplish this objective for you.
The trick then is to control where and how the data can be displayed in an
unencrypted format. If the data is encrypted in the data files, the data
is not compromised even if someone obtains a copy of the mdf and ldf files.
Control of the decryption key is crucial.
Hopefully this information will get you started on the project.
Thanks.

Need Advise on Stored Procedure

Little rusty on my SQL but here is what I need. Currently have a stored procedure that returns numerical data for 8 different element readings. ( Carbon, Silicon, Sulfur, etc ). This data is then put into a datagrid on an asp.net page and shows the readings for each test.
On my asp .net page... they only want data that is out of the specified ranges to be shown ( EX: > 1.6 AND < 2.0 ). Currently it is setup on the page to change the font color to red of data of its range but now they don't want data to be shown at all if for that one test everything is in its range.
So how could I write my Where clause to check the 8 different element ranges and only need one of them to be true in order to show.
Could I use an If / Then statement?
Any help is appreciated... Sorry this is quickly done but got to have it done soon.

Show your table layout. Also, are the ranges for all elements the same, or element specific?

Need advise on SSIS?

I am very new in SSIS. I have the Report Server set up with two dozen of the OLAP reports in it. The reports are connected to the OLAP database on a seperate computer running on Sql 2005 server and the data source for the OLAP DB is pointed to the warehouse database on another computer running on Sql 2000 server. The warehouse server updates daily from a number of "Production" Sql servers running on Sql 6.5 and Sql 7.0 with the legacy front-end data entry application. I know the update from the "Production" Sql 6.5/7.0 servers to the warehouse server complete around 9am in the morning everyday. How do I set up a package in SSIS to schedule the update of the OLAP database say 9:30am so that end-user can have the latest data to their report. The OLAP database has one fact table, half a dozen of cubes and ten dimensions. I know it is not an easy task to set up the package in SSIS. Please provide sample and step on how to do this. Thanks. One last question how to prevent/warn users from opening the report when SSIS updating the OLAP database?

Wow! that is 'whole project' question.

I recommend you to read about the REAL project, which offers a end-to-end BI implementation using SQL Server 2005 (including SSIS)

Need advise on SQL Server installating in MS cluster 2k3 Majority

Hi can't find much on whether can SQL 2000 Enterpise server be installed in a
windows 2003 cluster majority node set. Some forum say that SQL 2000 will not
run on ms cluster mns need to verify these thank you
GHi
SQL Server 2000 or 2005 are not supported on Windows 2003 MNS. The shared
nothing priciple does not work with SQL Server data.

Need Advise on SQL Express with Advanced Services

Hi Guys,

Need some advice on the free SQL Express with Advanced Services provided.

I plan to develop a small departmental multi-user applications with 5 to 6 simultaneous users using the free SQL Express with Advanced Services with VB.net and stored procedures on a local area network.

Is it a good choice to use this free SQL Express with Advanced Services or is it more advisable to purchase a standard version ?

Appreciate if someone could help me to address this issue?

One more thing, can i install the free SQL Express with Advanced Services on a normal desktop with Windows XP SP 2 and utilize it as a server or do i need a proper server with Windows 2003?

Thanks and Regards,

Jansen

If you have a small app and you're sure you'll only have 5 or 6 people generating a small load, then you should be OK with the Express version. I'd still recommend that it go on a server OS, primarilly because of the way security and networking are handled.

You also have some other limitations on Express such as database size and so forth, but you certainly could start your app there and grow into a larger server. All you have to do is backup and restore the database to the Standard Edition, and change your connection strings in your app.

Buck

|||

You should be fine with that, but you need to consider the space limitations as well. You can always grow the app into a Standard Edition. I'd also recommend that you always use a Server OS.

Express is well suited to the task you are discussing and yes it should install on a std windows desktop.

Need advise on Insert trigger

Hi all,

I am trying to create a insert trigger that gets a value from the new record and use that to get additional data from other tables and update the new record

this is howfar i came:

create trigger trUpdateGEOData
on BK_Machine
after insert
as
update BK_Machine
set BK_Machine.LOC_Street = GEO_Postcode.STraatID, BK_Machine.Loc_City = GEO_Postcode.PlaatsID
from BK_Machine join GEO_Postcode on BK_Machine.loc_postalcode = GEO_Postcode.postcode, inserted
where BK_Machine.MachineID = Inserted.MachineID and BK_Machine.Loc_Postalcode = GEO_Postcode.postcode and BK_Machine.LOC_Doornumber <= GEO_Postcode.van and
BK_Machine.LOC_Doornumber <= GEO_Postcode.tem

Trigger runs fine but doesn't do a thing probably it can't find the machineid i think,

can someone help me?

Cheers WimmoSo sorry for posting such a stupid mistake from my hazy view today!!

< should be >

Trying to get awake today, sorry for the disturbance

Cheers Wimmo|||Cleaned up your code:create trigger trUpdateGEOData
on BK_Machine
after insert
as
update BK_Machine
set BK_Machine.LOC_Street = GEO_Postcode.STraatID,
BK_Machine.Loc_City = GEO_Postcode.PlaatsID
from BK_Machine
inner join GEO_Postcode on BK_Machine.loc_postalcode = GEO_Postcode.postcode
and BK_Machine.LOC_Doornumber <= GEO_Postcode.van
and BK_Machine.LOC_Doornumber <= GEO_Postcode.tem
inner join inserted on BK_Machine.MachineID = Inserted.MachineID
Now, it strikes me that the inner join on GEO_Postcode could return no records, in which case no BK_Machine records would be updated. It could also potentially return more than one record, in which case you would get unpredictable results for your update.|||Thanx Blindman,

What do you mean with the inner join: is it when there are more records inserted at the same time with the same machineid?

Need advise on horizontal table partitioning

Hello,

I need some advise in table design, and more specifically about table partitioning. I read some papers and there was mentioned that if a table is expected to hold millions of rows, it's a good idea to partition it.

Vertical partitioning, as I understood it, is separating data that differs in some way in a separate table, adding a key field as an identifier to what segment it belongs.

The particular table holds signal measurements from different sites and has the following layout :

SiteID int,
MeasID int,
Timestamp datetime,
Value real,
Status int
etcJunk int

SiteID, MeasID and Timestamp form the PK.

The horizontal partitioning should be obviously done by Timestamp, but that creates pretty bad problems with automatic table creation (when it's time to do so), inserts from measurement system and selects from report tools - generally with the application code.

I would appreciate any consistent strategy for implementing such partitioning.

Ops, just to mention - OS - Windows, MSSQL 2000, in case that matters in any way.An update...

After reading some stuff for partitions, views etc, I decided to split the data in two tables - one for the last month (that will need to be queried regularly), called RDATA_CURR and one for the the older data for the last year (that will be queried really rarely). A scheduled stored procedure should move data between them on daily basis. For the experiment I created a table RDATA_FULL that holds the sane data as the above tables. Also created a view (union all) on the first two tables. The thing is that there are some selects that need to be transparent upon the splitted tables and don't need to be really fast (while other are to be fast and always from the last month or so). The inserts are always at the current, because the timestamps are current time, actually.

So I generated few millions raws of junk and filled the tables. After that made the same typical select from the view, the full table and the current (the needed data is within the current period). The execution plan shows that actually select from the view is twice as slow as select from the full table, which is very close to the select from the current (full has millions and current has tens of thousands). This is not really what I expected - the split does not really make things better.

So my question is, first, does really the execution plan shows correctly queries cost? If it is, then such kind of splitting the data does not really improve performance on selects from all data.

The typical select is a select for a certain time interval for a certain ID. I wonder if I could make the select in the view more sophisticated, so the query is actually done on the partitioned table that actually holds the data.|||Well, it seems that I will drop the partitioning thing, especially with the results I get from very large tables.

There are two tables - rdata_f holding data for all sites, about 10 millions generated rows for various sites and rdata_1 (check constraint on site_id) holding data only from site 1, having about 2 millions rows. The tables have identical layout and PK (the only difference is CHECK on Site_ID). The thing is that selects on index are much faster with the larger table.

How is that possible? I use dbcc dropcleanbuffers before each select and the check constraint should not matter for selects. The larger table is 15 times faster...

need advise on DELETE action.

Hi friends
i've a table that has 3 columns that refer to same parent table(foreign keys).am trying to following as part of action.

ALTER TABLE dbo.u_childTable ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_childTable_MASTER_BATCHTO FOREIGN KEY
(
FK_BATCHTO_MASTERID
) REFERENCES dbo.u_master
(
MASTERID
) ON UPDATE NO ACTION
ON DELETE NO ACTION

GO
ALTER TABLE dbo.u_childTable ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_childTable_MASTER_FEESCALER FOREIGN KEY
(
FK_FEESCALER_MASTERID
) REFERENCES dbo.u_master
(
MASTERID
) ON UPDATE set null
ON DELETE set null

GO
ALTER TABLE dbo.u_childTable ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_childTable_MASTER_SUBDEBT FOREIGN KEY
(
FK_SUBDEBT_MASTERID
) REFERENCES dbo.u_master
(
MASTERID
) ON UPDATE set null
ON DELETE set null

GO

but it wont let me complaining with following error
"Introducing

FOREIGN KEY constraint 'bl..blahh' on table 'childTable' may cause cycles or

multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO

ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints."

what am i missing here
You may only have one constraint and one refernece action for an action defined for the relation between two tables in your situation.

HTH, Jens Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||

Please check out the Books Online topic below for restrictions on using cascading actions on referential constraints. They are same for SQL Server 2000 and 2005.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186973.aspx

|||

Thanks for the post Jens.

i dont think i got the point but while investigation this issue i found following MSDN link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q321843/

above link says that

"the tree of cascading referential actions must only have one path to a particular table on the cascading referential actions tree. "

but am not specifying any "cascade" as action. am setting either "SET NULL" or "NO ACTION".

much appreciated if you can guide me to understand this concept better.

|||or does it mean that i also need to check other foreign keys defined on this child table ?|||Any SET option (SET NULL or SET DEFAULT) is also a cascading action. So the restriction applies to SET NULL, SET DEFAULT and CASCADE. SET NULL|DEFAULT is a special case of cascade where the value is set to NULL or DEFAULT on column(s) respectively.|||

Thanks for the post Umachandar.

it also says same as my above link

" No table can appear more than one time in the list of all cascading referential actions that result from the DELETE or UPDATE. Also, the tree of cascading referential actions must not have more than one path to any specified table."

is there any way to get the this tree graphically .

btw how would you handle such a scenario with database desgin ?

Thanks

|||You could get the tree using a recursive CTE in SQL Server 2005. The way to handle this if you hit the restrictions is to enforce the referential integrity rules (part of it) using triggers in SQL Server.|||>>The

Thanks for this. Thats what we decided to do now.

i know CTE but dont know how to use in this regard. can you give me some idea
Thanks again

See below link for more details on how to write a recursive CTE:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186243.aspx

|||Thanks for that.
Thats what i've been looking and am getting error

"The statement terminated. The maximum recursion 100 has been exhausted before statement completion."

btw am trying this
with joins as
(
select child,child_column from vJoins
where parent='mytable'
union all
select fkeys.child,fkeys.child_column from vJoins fkeys
inner join joins on fkeys.parent = joins.child
)
select * from joins

btw the view "vJoins" is nothing but list from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.REFERENTIAL_CONSTRAINTS view

can you see what the error is?
Thanks for ur help|||

The error message happens because you are not specifying the termination condition for the recursion. See below for an example:

with consts (child_schema, child_table, parent_schema, parent_table)
as (
select ctu1.TABLE_SCHEMA, ctu1.TABLE_NAME, ctu2.TABLE_SCHEMA, ctu2.TABLE_NAME
from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.REFERENTIAL_CONSTRAINTS as rc
join INFORMATION_SCHEMA.CONSTRAINT_TABLE_USAGE as ctu1
on ctu1.CONSTRAINT_SCHEMA = rc.CONSTRAINT_SCHEMA

and ctu1.CONSTRAINT_NAME = rc.CONSTRAINT_NAME
join INFORMATION_SCHEMA.CONSTRAINT_TABLE_USAGE as ctu2
on ctu2.CONSTRAINT_SCHEMA = rc.UNIQUE_CONSTRAINT_SCHEMA

and ctu2.CONSTRAINT_NAME = rc.UNIQUE_CONSTRAINT_NAME
),
const_tree (child_schema, child_table, parent_schema, parent_table, path, level)
as (

/* get all parents except for the self-referential ones, we will do that later */
select distinct parent_schema, parent_table
, cast(NULL as nvarchar(128)), cast(NULL as nvarchar(128))

, cast(N'' as nvarchar(4000)), cast(0 as int)
from consts
where not (child_schema = parent_schema and child_table = parent_table)
union all
select fk.child_schema, fk.child_table, fk.parent_schema, fk.parent_table
, p.path + '/' + quotename(p.child_schema) + '.' + quotename(p.child_table)
, p.level + 1
from consts as fk
join const_tree as p
on fk.parent_schema = p.child_schema
and fk.parent_table = p.child_table
)
select parent_schema, parent_table, child_schema, child_table, path, level
from const_tree
where level > 0
union all
select parent_schema, parent_table, child_schema, child_table, '/' + quotename(child_schema) + '.' + quotename(child_table), 0
from consts
where (child_schema = parent_schema and child_table = parent_table)

wonderful UmaChandar

will give it a try tomorrow and update you.

Thanks again :)

|||hi UmaChandar
i tried that and still getting same error with one of our main (bigger) databases
"The statement terminated. The maximum recursion 100 has been exhausted before statement completion."

how can i troubleshoot it?
btw it works with one of our smaller databases which has very few joins.
Thank you very much|||It is possible that there are many ways to get cycles with referential constraints. The simple case with the self-referential constraint was easy to eliminate. You can usually determine the rows that cause the cycles by looking at the partial result set. Look for rows that have repeating values for example. Once you locate such rows, you need to identity how the cycle happens so that you could detect it in the recursive member of CTE.

need advise of basic knowledge

I dont know where to put this thread, I just wanna ask a question..actually what is happen when subscription synchronized the publications among IIS process.. (SQLMobile)

could you guys give me a diagram/schema of it?

thanks before

What are you looking for?

If you want a detailed process regarding security and logins that get used using web synchronization, refer to this:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345212.aspx

If you have any other specific questions, please do post them.

|||

thanks for your reply Mahesh :)

I also curious about, when subscriber do data update on SQLMobile, and then use sync process, what is happen with the data on publisher?is it updated like the subscriber did or subscriber will change back the data to origin publisher's?I'm using merge replication

many many thanks..

|||

If the subscriber updates data and there are no conflicting publisher updates, the subscribers updates will be propagated to the publisher.

If there are conflicts (publisher and subscriber update the same row or same column -- depending on row or column tracking) there could be conflicts and one of them may lose. Also the winning row is governed by the type of article resolver you choose.

|||

thx for ur info

I'll try it
