Need help connecting java to mssql, I'm even lost at install

Hello,

Hope anyone in here can help.
I have tried to install the SQL Server 5 Express, but can't seem to get it to work properly.
I got a terrible name set as default for my database, as well as a terrible name for my username.
I can't find a place to change this to something more manageable.

It is further set to windows auth, but trying to set it to both, and trying a username (and password) always gives me a log in error.

I've tried searching all over the net and in here for a simple tutorial, but can't seem to find one that helps me more than it confuses me.

*****
The second part of the problem is that I have a java program which I want to connect to the database and use the tables in it, but I am at loss to how I can find what username (and password) I am supposed to have, what "url" it needs etc.
I have the jdbc driver so that part should work, I can successfully log to other mssql databases (at work/school), but not my own.

Hope you can help, and thanks in advance.

Hi,

to change a database name

alter database testdb

modify name = TestTmpDB

go

and to chagne user name

alter user AbolrousHazem

with Name = TempTestUser

go

while connecting to SQL Server from Java which error you get? you have wrote that you have set it with Windows Authentication, have you cross checked with Connectilon String?

Hi Murky,

I would encourage you to use the SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver. You can download it from here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/data/aa937724.aspx. To connect to SQL Server using the driver, please refer to the section of that page regarding building the Connection String http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms378428.aspx. Note, connection string and url are synonyms. There are also many sample java applications available at the first link too.

Note that you can connection to SQL Server using two methods:

1. Username and Password Credentials

2. Windows Authentication.

To do a windows authenticated connection, the server should have been setup with "mixed-mode authentication". If you installed with all the default options, this feature was not installed then. If it was not then you need to use your username/password credentials or reconfigure the server to use mixed-mode authentication.

Hope this helps.

Need Help Configuring SQL Server Express

I have Visual Studio 2005 Professional installed and SQL Server Express installed. In following along with the Microsoft Visual C# Step by Step book, there is a procedure on page xxi to get access to SQL Server Express. At the 2> prompt, however, when I type in go and then press enter, I get the following message:

Msg 15247 Level 16, State 1, Server MyServerName\SQLEXPRESS, Procedure sp_grantlogin, Line 13

User does not have permission to perform this action.

The computer is my own personal computer, with Window Vista installed and no previous versions of MSDE installed. I also have administrator persmissions. The only guidelines in the procedure regarding what to do in the event of an error message is to ensure that the commands were typed in correctly. What could be causing this message, since I do have administrator permissions?

hi,

as you are dealing with Vista and UAC related issues, please verify your actual login has the minimal required permissions to execute sp_grantlogin system stored procedure, ALTER ANY LOGIN or higher...

regards

|||

Hi. When I go to Start->Control Panel->User Accounts, and then click on the Change Your Account Type link, the window that appears shows my present status, which is Administrator. A message in the window states:

"Administrators have complete access to the computer and can make any desired changes."

Following that sentence is a sentence which has advice about creating a password. I then cancel the task, since I really didn't want to change my status. Was that sufficient to verify that I've got the minimal required permissions to execute sp_grantlogin?

I'm not sure what UAC means (User Account Control?). But I do have a problem with Windows Defender not working...giving me a message that it cannot update the definitions. In following the help threads on Windows Defender problems, I discovered that there is no wuaucpl.cpl file in my windows directory. I've opened up an email help procedure with Microsoft on that.

Edit: I realize now that wuaucpl.cpl is no longer a file included in Windows Vista (though my SQL Server problem is probably not related to my problem with Windows Defender).

|||

hi,

this is correct at the OS level, but please verify "inside" SQLExpress that your login has appropriate permissions as well..

regards

|||Hi. Unfortunately, I am a complete neophyte when it comes to SQL Server. How do I verify that my login has the appropriate permissions? I've never actually started SQLExpress or done anything with it. I know that I have a SQL Sever configuration manager tool, and when I open it and look at the SQL Server 2005 Services folder, I can see that SQLExpress is running.|||

Vista has changed the playing field and now forces everyone to run as a non-administrative user, even if you're an administrator, until you explicity request to be elevated to administrative privleges. I've explained a bit about how this works and how to correctly configure SQL Express on Vista in this blog post. You already have SQL installed, so make sure you're using SP2 and then follow the instruction for running the Provisioning tool to correctly set your access level.

Mike

|||Mike, thanks for that info. I do have SP2 installed. I just want to clear up one more thing. When I open up the SAC tool, and click on Add New Administrator, the SQL Server 2005 User Provisioning Tool for Vista window opens. In it there is a text box that has MyServerName\UserName as the user to provision. In the available privileges in the left pane, there is SQLEXPRESS with one item named: Member of SQL Server SysAdmin role on SQLEXPRESS. This is the only availbable privilege showing. So I should transfer this privilege, and I should then be able to grant myself the sp_grantlogin permission? Just want to make sure about this before I do anything.|||

All you need to do is give yourself SysAdmin privledges and you're done, no need to use sp_grantlogin. Once you're a SysAdmin you have every permission that it is possible to have.

Mike

Need help - SQL Express 2005 (Beta 2) - where to start ?

Hi,
I downloaded and installed SQL Express 2005 (Beta 2). I want to create
tables and see whether I can get the data from the trivial windows based
application or web application I will be building in C# using Visual Studio
2003.
Question :
Where can I get the details regarding how to create tables in SQL 2005 and
how to get it connected with my application? Any suggestions regarding any
websites or good books that I can use to learn as well as use it as
reference in future.
Thank you for your time and willingness to help.
Best Regards,
Likhith
Download the Books Online for SQL Express 2005 and then just select Help on
the menu. If you want to get a lot deeper, there's already a really good
book out on SQL 2005. "A First Look At SQL Server 2005 For Developers" is
available from MS Press. I have it and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Need Help

I have inbuilt SQL server express database with VS 2005. I can able to create the databases but i don't know how to use those databases in my application.

That's a pretty big question without some context!

Let's start out with some basics:

SQL Express learning videos: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/learning/default.aspx VS 2005 training for database usage: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/beginner/windows/tier3/

Need basic guidance on massive access to sql conversion

I have a rather daunting task ahead of me. I have ot take an access mdb and bring it into sql express. Converting the tables is not a biggie, but I have more than 2500 queries that need to be brought over. I have several questions.

1. In many places I use queries with parameters as views. For example I might have a query that takes a couple of parameters and then turn around write another query that uses the first query as a table. Is there a way to do parameterized views in Sql?

2. Does anyone know of a decent automated tool to do this? The upsizing wizard is useless and I tried teh sql migration assistant, and it doesn't convert queries that have parameters.

3. Has anyone done anything on this kind of scale before?

Thanks ... Ed

1. The closest to parameterized views is using Table Valued Functions. Check in Books Online about using TVFs.

2. No 'decent tools' known. Parameterized views can be 'troublesome'.

3. Yes, and it will take a lot of dilligent and concentrated effort.

and 4. Good Luck -because you WILL need it!

Need an opinion: Access vs. SQL Server Express or another alternative?

I inherited this website from a previous developer that uses an Access DB as a backend. Ugh. Apparently, he was extremely limited in what databases he could use. The website is filled with problems related to connecting to this database, which is no surprise. Most of them are related to permissions to the database file, multiple user access, etc.

I am thinking about moving this to a SQL Server Express DB and upgrading the site to the 2.0 framework. Most of my experience is in SQL Server, but since they can't, or won't, pay for the SQL Server Database, is this a good solution? I've considered using MySQL as well, but their host won't provide support for this. Are there any other recommended alternatives?

I would go for SQL Express out of any of those alternatives... and I've done a lot of alternatives. SQL Express is actually very nice, and if you are already farmiliar with SQL Server, then a lot of the syntax will still make sense.

Actually,www.SingingEels.com was running on SQL Express for a while, but when I put it on my shared hosting environment, they have SQL Server 2005, and don't support SQL Express, so I moved it to that.

|||

I suggest that you move toSQL Server 2005 Express Edition which is completely free (though it has less features than the commercial full edition) and good to use for small-medium websites. It is a much better alternative than MS Access, besides its free for commercial use too.

Hope this helps,

Vivek

Need Advise on SQL Express with Advanced Services

Hi Guys,

Need some advice on the free SQL Express with Advanced Services provided.

I plan to develop a small departmental multi-user applications with 5 to 6 simultaneous users using the free SQL Express with Advanced Services with VB.net and stored procedures on a local area network.

Is it a good choice to use this free SQL Express with Advanced Services or is it more advisable to purchase a standard version ?

Appreciate if someone could help me to address this issue?

One more thing, can i install the free SQL Express with Advanced Services on a normal desktop with Windows XP SP 2 and utilize it as a server or do i need a proper server with Windows 2003?

Thanks and Regards,

Jansen

If you have a small app and you're sure you'll only have 5 or 6 people generating a small load, then you should be OK with the Express version. I'd still recommend that it go on a server OS, primarilly because of the way security and networking are handled.

You also have some other limitations on Express such as database size and so forth, but you certainly could start your app there and grow into a larger server. All you have to do is backup and restore the database to the Standard Edition, and change your connection strings in your app.

Buck

|||

You should be fine with that, but you need to consider the space limitations as well. You can always grow the app into a Standard Edition. I'd also recommend that you always use a Server OS.

Express is well suited to the task you are discussing and yes it should install on a std windows desktop.

Need Access-like security of SQL Server Express

Is there a way to implement Access-like password protection on a SQL Server Express dataset?

The database will be deployed on individual's PCs with no centralization of control. I want to restrict users from being able to see table definitions, stored procedures, etc. Access-like password protection is what I want, but I don't see any similar feature within SQL Server Express. Am I missing something?

hi,

at current time SQL Server does not provide this kind of "protection".. you can just encrypt stored procedures/views/user defined functions, you can even encrypt data, but you can not "hide" the database metaschema of the included tables..

Nebie connection problems with SQL Server 2005 Express and VS 2005

I downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express and some sample databases (incl. Adventureworks_data.mdf), but when I try to Add Connection in VS 2005 to point to this db and use the Test Connection button, it gives the error:

Microsoft Visual Studio

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I've tried setting the data source as either "Microsoft SQL Server Database File" or "Microsoft SQL Server", but get the same error.

Any tips on verifying SQL Srv Express is installed correctly? Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

What happens if you set the source=(local)?
