Need help :_(

Is there any way to register an evaluation version of SQL 2005?

So I had a database using the evaluation version of SQL 2005 and didn’t know it was a trial version until it locked me out of it a couple days ago now I got a big problem.

Is there any way I can move the data that I had to another database without using the SQL server management studio.

But what I would really like to do is register this trial version of SQL that the @.#%# people left me with and didn’t tell any one.

Any help would be grate Big Smile

I don't think u can register trial version... what u can do is, download sql server 2005 Express edition (free) and install. Move the database from evaluation version using Dettach/attach or backup /restore method. Remove evaluation edition.

Stop the service. Copy the MDF and LDF files of the database you need and attach them to another running SQL Server instance.

|||Is there any thing else i need to save after that? Most of the stuff in the database was for a website done in ASP

so i guess i got to redo my connection strings to or is there any way around that?

|||

You can 'install' a licensed edition of SQL Server 'over the top' of the evaluation version, and it will upgrade.

If you choose to move the data files to another server, you will have to change the connnections strings on the applications.

You may also have to deal with adding the logins and permissions for the new server.

|||

Be aware that upgrading you instance will need the same edition type as the original version. If you want to (down-)Update your eval-Version, you will have to do a attach/restore to another instance. (As Arnie mentioned you will have to change the connectionstrings to the appropiate new instance and keep track of the logins (server principals) as they are stored in the master database.

Need another pair of eyes sql Order by

my page suddenly stopped working when I wasn't working on it and it seems to be down to the 'ORDER BY' part of my SQL. I'm here alone as usual and I need someone to glance at the sql strings below. (yes, I do need the select *)
If I run this in SQL Manager it works fine:
SELECT * from dest_search WHERE trip_type like 'Trekking' ORDER BY start_date
if I do the same from my asp page it fails but if I leave out 'ORDER BY start_date' it works.

the error I get is:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e21'
Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.

/Newindex/trip_types.asp, line 53

line 53 is the 'desc = oRS...' bizarrely
oRS.Open strSQL, oConn, 2, 3
oRS.moveFirst
Do while not oRS.eof
country = oRS("country")
53--> desc = oRS("description")
url_link = oRS("url_link")
startDate = oRS("start_date")
endDate = oRS("end_date")
trip = oRS("trip_type")
difficulty = oRS("difficulty")
not all the descriptions are filled in (some are null) but that doesn't stop SQL manager from working or unordered results coming up fine in my web page.

any comments gratefully received thanks. Is the SQL Statement hard-coded in the asp page? Or can people change the value of 'Trekking'?

Outside of that, you could try to reference the fields by number (starting at 0, naturally), and see if you are running into the fact that "Description" is a keyword in T-SQL.|||people can change TREKKING and that bit works, but I have simplified the sql string in this thread so people concentrate on what's going wrong.
the examples above work fine on the web page and SQL manager but the web version fails if I add 'ORDER BY start_date'
The fact that it all works fine makes me think there's no problem with spelling.
What's T-SQL and is that relevent to me using MS SQL Server and asp -vvbscript?|||T-SQL = Transact SQL. Microsoft/Sybase's version of the Structured Query Language standard. All queries passed to SQL Server are in T-SQL by definition.

I was wondering if an extra quote may have strayed into the word 'Trekking', which would more likely throw a syntax problem, though.

Have you tried using a different Cursor Type in the line:

oRS.Open strSQL, oConn, 2, 3

Maybe the dynamic cursor is the one having trouble with a sorted recordset. Not being a VB programmer of any note, this is more of an educated guess.|||test your spelling theroy
try - order by 4

also could be that ASP is terminating the string prior to order by.
some sort of ''' problem
Test this by removing the where clause

print / msgbox whatever ASP uses to select the SQL prior to running.

Just some thoughts|||thanks I'll have a go and get back 2u|||I removed the cursors and it works. thanks MCrowley

innitially they were 2,3 (whatever that means)
then I changed them to 0,1 and it worked then I removed them thinking that if I don't know what I'm doing I should go with the defaults... or change jobs.

Thanks for your time folks

Need all rows within each group to be shown on 1 page

Hi,

I have data that is grouped by a code number. One of the code numbers have over 600 rows, while other code numbers have around 10 to 20 rows within it.

When I run the report the code number that has over 600 rows gets split over 2 pages while the other code numbers each get their own page.

How do I make it so that when I run the report the code number that has over 600 rows gets all displayed on the 1 page instead of being split over 2?

Thanks

Ben.

can anyone help please?|||

Hi ben22,

I'm afraid there is not really a functionality in Reporting Services that does this. I know this is a lack in Reporting Services.

Hi Ben

Do you just want it to display on 1 page in the browser or
do you require this for printing aswell?

If it is for viewing purposes only, you can try to set the
'Interactive Page size' in the report properties to have a higher width.

G

|||need it both for display in the browser and for printing, as when it gets exported to excell it needs to be in the same sheet instead of being expanded over 2. This is because a certain value in the row gets summed at the end and I need that sum to include all the rows within the group, as when it splits over 2 pages I get two different sums where they should be altogether.|||

Hi ben,

As mentioned before, it is not possible to make the page size dynamic for printing and viewing at the same time.

You mentioned that you receive 2 sum results. It is possible to only have only a total line at the end in case of on each page.

For example:
When you use a Table you can set the total in the Table footer. Even if the table overlaps multiple pages, it will only be displayed at the last page.

Sorry, I should of explain things a bit better before. By groups I meant I have 1 group in the table. This group breaks the data up by the unique field assigned to each data item and uses a group footer to do the sum. For example:

I have 800 cars, 600 are red 100 are blue and 100 are green. So when I run the report is looks like this

Page 1

RED

Name | Model | Price

Car1 | c1 | 20000

Car2 | c2 | 30000

…

Car400 | c400 | 15000

-

Total Price: 3000000

Page 2

Total Price: 1500000

Page 3

Car1 | c1 | 25000

Car2 | c2 | 17000

…

Car100 | c100 | 40000

Total Price: 1200000

As you can see there are 4 pages. It splits the RED cars up over 2 pages giving the 2 different sums ie: cars 1 – 400 with the sum 3000000 and then cars 401 – 600 with the sum 1500000. I want my report to work so that the RED cars are all together and not on different pages, so altogether there are only 3 pages. So to look like this:

Page 1

RED

Name | Model | Price

Car1 | c1 | 20000

Car2 | c2 | 30000

Hi,

It is not possible to force a group on 1 page but it is possible to have only 1 total per group. You need to set the Color field in the expresion of the group. When you then look at the group footer, you will see that the total is done on group base.

Sorry but I dont really understand what you have said or how to implement it

|||

Hi,

What I mean is that you can not force the contents of a group to be on 1 page. Although the problem you have that the total is displayed on each page can be avoided by using the footer of the group. When you set the total in the group of the footer, only at the end of the group a total will be displayed and not at the end of each page.

Hope this is more clear.

Need a way to change report page width at runtime

I have a report whose columns will be hidden at runtime and the final width
of the table during runtime will be less than 10.5. However initially at
design time my table width is more than 10.5 and hence my report page width
is also more than 10.5. Thus when I export the page to pdf format in report
manager it adds a blank page for each and every normal page with data. is
there a way to modify the width of report page and in turn table width during
runtime, so that blank page can be avoided in pdf export?
I cannot use matrix or others due to various reasons. I can use only table
in my report. is there any other way to change report page width at runtime
without dealing with report rdl file (xml file) directly?
I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.I should add, that I really mean I don't think you can change this on the fly
without writing a custom rendering extension.

rendering and change the column width, table width and page width? if that is
possible then is there any example that I can follow to proceed further?

I agree with Wayne that this is not support in builtin rendering extension
and there is no method to change report during the runtime.
If you want to deal with rdl directly, you may want to deisgn a Web
applicaiton using reporting services API directly. You could create report
by using reportingservices.createreport method. You could change rdl by
using code and then create a report on the fly. The following link is for

Need a faster paging in a wesite search result page

Do you have any idea about the Full Text Indexing?

I don't know if you designed the table but have you also checked to ensure that all the proper indexes have been added ? You also might want to look at the query execution plan to see which part is consuming most of the execution time such as a hash or merge join etc.

Nearly blank report manager/home page

Hi,
I have just installed Reporting Services for SQL Server 2005. I went through
the configuration tool and everything went smoothly. However... when I
navigate to the report manager (http://MyReportServer/reports) I see the page
OK and the header is all there (i.e. Labels like "SQL Server Reporting

top RH side) however, there are none of the usual tabs on this main page. I
expect to see "Contents" and other tabs/folders, but they are just not there.
Any ideas?

Navigation: page position

Hi everybody,
I have this "minor" problem...
This is the situation:
a list of orders is shown
I scroll downwards in my page to look for a certain order
I click on the order to see the order details (jump to the detail
report)
use the back button to go back to the list of orders (previous page)
now I'm at the top of my result again, instead of my last position of
the order I took a look at
This behavoir is really annoying! I did not have this behavoir of
popping back to the top of the list with RS2000. It started with
RS2005.
Anyone having the same problem? Even better... a fix or workaround?
Kind Regards, VivianKICK

Hello,
I have been trying for a while to get one field in my report to link to
a page on my local server. I have looked in the older post as well as on
the internet and have found so examples that just don't work for me. I
am running SRS SP2 and using an MSCRM database as my source. The code I
am using is as follows: = "javascript:void(window.open('http://crm/SFA/leads/edit.aspx?id={' &
Fields!leadid.Value.ToString & '}'))". I am incredibly new to javascript
and sort of know what this code does but I don't know if I am using the
function correctly and if this function will even work. When I use the
hyperlinked field, my screen flickers and nothing happens. So any help
you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Jeff JonesYou are assembling a string here. Change it to this:
= "javascript:void(window.open('http://crm/SFA/leads/edit.aspx?id={'" &
Fields!leadid.Value.ToString & "'}'))".
You need the additional double quotes.

Thank you for pointing that out. Though, after I change my syntax, I
still can't get the code to work. Could this be an explorer setting? I
have tried this same code but with google.com replaced with my crm url.
My screen flashes and windows makes a 'ding' sound and then nothing.
Looked in the event logs. Nothing. Looked at the task manager as I was
firing the link. Nothing. I don't really know what is happening with
this. Any other suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks,
Jeff|||Here is a working one for me. Take the following line and cut and paste it
into the jump to url.
= "javascript:void(window.open('http://www.google.com','_blank'))"
Note that you have to have SP1 or SP2 installed for this to work.

I have learned that spacing matters with this particular section of the
program. The syntax of the day is: ="javascript:void(window.open('http://crm/SFA/leads/edit.aspx?id={"&
Fields!leadid.Value &"}'))". There is a space between the amperstands
and the Fields name. Any thing less than this exact syntax will not
work. Also the link will not work in the VS dev. env. The report needs
to be deployed before it will work worth a darn. Since leadid is a GUID
and SRS does not play nice with GUIDs, you need to use <CAST(Lead.LeadId
as nvarchar(80)) as leadid> when creating your dataset. Follow all of
this and you will have a nice day.

Jeff

"','_blank','left=50,top=50,width=800,height=580,menubar=no,resizable=yes,scrollbars=Yes,status=yes,toolbar=0'))"
Issue 1 :
The link is working fine for the first time. When I click the link for the
first time...the new window opens fine with the detail report...but when i
close the new window(detail report) and click the link nothing happens,no
report open..why. Also if i keep the new window(of detail report) as is
without closing and then click on the link again in the graph report...one
more new window opens up with the detail report...
Why does the link not work when i close the new window and re-click the link
Issue 2 :
I am trying this...
The window we open the report in contains frames..and we open the report in
the lower frame...how can i get the new detail report to open in the same
frame.
I tried using '_self'...but with this the new detail report is open on the
main IE page where our actual application is been open.
Any suggestions to get it working as I wish it tooo...would help.
Thanks.
SKI am still stuck on this...
I am doubting this is some kind of setting issue or what
I changed the URL link to simple
= "javascript:void(window.open('http://www.google.com','_blank'))"
even this ...when i open it for the first time it works fine...but when i
close the new window the link does not work anymore...
fyi : we are deploying the reports in PDF format...any issue with adobe !!!
I get a security warning saying document is trying to open a link...but
nothing opens after the firsttime '
any ideas....

It sounds kind-of-like your browser settings are not allowing pop-
ups.
Regards,
Enrique Martinez
Sr. Software Consultant|||Thanks EMartinez for the reply...
But no I have tried that...by allowing any popups...
It seems really strange...I think it has something to do with adobe
reader...no idea what?
The link opens fine for the first time...the second time i click ..nothing
happens except i get the security errror from adobe reader saying the
document is trying to open the link bla bla. The link works fine when the
window opened the first time is kept open!Whyyyyy

Navigation buttons Dimmed

Anyone know why my navigation buttons on my reports is always dimmed so that I can only see the very first page of every report? I even spent some time with a Microsoft SQL Server engineer trying to figure this one out and he wasn't able to figure out why?

I tried to attach a picture but I guess pictures aren't allowed. The first page, previous page, next page and last page buttons displayed as arrows on the top left of the reports are always dimmed on every report even though they have multiple pages.

Has this happened to anyone and how did you get it fixed?

Thanks

Anybody?|||

Hello,

Between the navigation buttons, does it show "1 of 1", or does it show the actual page count for the second number? Can you manually type in another page number and navigate that way?

It's completely dimmed. In other words, I can't even type in a page number. It says "of 0". To make it even more interesting, if I go to the report from http://machineName/reportserver instead of http://machineName/reports; it works fine. There are 44 pages.

This has got me completely baffled.

|||Bump. I guess I'm going to have to use another of my MSDN phone incidences? I guess no one else has run into this problem?

Navigation buttons

Is there a way to add the navigation bar with next page, previous page etc buttons at the bottom of the report. If the report is long the users dont want to scoll up to click on next page.

There is no easy way to accomplish this. It can not be done in Report Manager. If you are writing your own web app you could do this by writing your own tool bar, but it would require quite a bit of code.|||Thank you Daniel.
