We recently installed a new dual-CPU Xenon server with 4 GB of RAM. I have the
SQL server configured for "Automatic" memory space allocation. Currently, SQL
is using about 1.5 GB of memory and mssearch is using about 20 MB. mssearch is
being hit much more intensively then the SQL server, and it is paging heavily.
I know how to set a static memory space size for the SQL server, but I don't
know how to set how much memory mssearch will use. Should I just set a static
memory size for SQL to restrict its size, or is there some way to specify how
much mssearch should use?
What are reasonable memory space settings for SQL and mssearch on a 4GB system?
On our system, searching is much more intensive then other SQL operations.

Phil,
You can set how much memory the MSSearch service will use via
sp_fulltext_service 'resource_usage' <value>, where <value> is 1 - 5 with 3
being the default. If you set the resource_usage level to 5 (dedicated), the
MSSearch service will use up to a max of 512Mb of RAM. Note, this RAM is
below the 3Gb limit and the service will ONLY use this amount of RAM if no
other service is using or requesting additional RAM as it is passive in
nature. The max of 512Mb is a hard-coded limit and cannot be increased. This
is why SQL Server's memory needs to be set to "fixed memory" and not dynamic
memory as SQL Server will request more memory, if it needs it and therefore
the MSSearch will not be able to use that memory.
Q. Should I just set a static memory size for SQL to restrict its size, or
is there some way to specify how much mssearch should use?
A. No, you need to do both, set static memory for sql server as well as set
sp_fulltext_service 'resource_usage' to 5.
Q. What are reasonable memory space settings for SQL and mssearch on a 4GB
system?
A. For SQL Server that would depend upon your processes, but for the
MSSearch service the max is 512Mb.

John

I have installed SQL 2005 reporting services and I configured it using
Reporting Services Configuration. Now I tried to access to report manager
using http://servername/Reports with login I used to start reporting
services. It doesn't work and keep prompting me for login and password. But
no use and I am sure this login is correct and password correct and it
started the reportings services successfully. Can anyone please help how to
solve this problem. Thanks. On Nov 4, 9:56 pm, " Miley Cyrus" <a...@.b.com> wrote:

You might want to check the Virtual Directories and see if the
permissions are set to anonymous. To do this, right-click My Computer

Information Services >> Web Sites >> Default Web Site >> right-click
the Reports/ReportServer virtual directories >> select Properties >

select Anonymous access, Allow IIS to control password and Integrated

In fact, it is checked already. Integrade window

checked as well. Only .net passport atuthentication and default domain and

Need for Distributor server in existing Replication Setup
We have a setup with one Publisher Server and 15 Subscribers with merge replication configured for all subscribers. The current Database size is approximately 3 GB expected to grow to 10 GB in next 1 year. We wanted to know what benefits would we incur if we add an additional seperate distributor server (hardware box). Also, what is the approx. size of a database where a seperate distributor server (hardware box) is recommended.
Thanks in advanceRead up on replication in SQL Books Online (provided with SQL Server). It covers a lot of the trade-offs in detail. Without knowing a LOT more about your configuration, plans, etc. I don't know how to give you a simple answer.
Typically, when you have one publisher with only 15 subscribers, the load isn't too heavy unless the publisher is stressed. The primary advantage comes from improved security, better network performance, and better managability. As your system grows (more data and more subscribers), then the performance benefits will start to come into play.
Again, without a lot more understanding of what you are doing now and what you plan to do in the near future, I really can't give you a straightforward answer.
-PatP|||Sometimes you make me crack up, I swear. ..."only 15 subscribers"... You'll see an immediate benefit even if you have just 1 subscriber...man, how many of those have you set up?|||Nice to know that you find me good for something!
I've set up about six production replication systems, a few hundred training systems, and I'm not really sure how many test systems. As I said in my first post, without knowing a lot more about what the poster wants and what they've actually got, any observation I can offer is only in very general terms.
Based on my experience, if you set up at least one NIC for replication on a relatively beefy box, it can handle a reasonable user load along with the replication... If you try to skimp on bandwidth, RAM, or processing power, you can certainly swamp any box.
It seems obvious to me that having a separate distributor is better than having one box do both, so on that point we certainly agree. I guess the question is where do you see the performance "knee" due to the additional load imposed by distribution. Without knowing a lot more, I don't see how you can offer much insight there.
-PatP|||Hey, I just felt that having 15 subscribers is enough to predict that a dedicated distributor is well due, that's all ;)
