Need for Multi-Threaded Visual Basic.NET to SQL Server Data Access Example Code

Of all the Visual Basic.NET data access books that I have purchased and all the Internet site example code that I have reviewed, none have had any good examples of multi-threaded VB.NET code doing data access.

I am trying to avoid the non-responsiveness in a VB app while a simple data retrieval from SQL Server 2005 is in progress.

If anyone knows of any book titles or web sites that have example code (good or not) of multi-threaded VB.NET applications doing data access against Microsoft SQL Server (7, 2000, or 2005) or even against Microsoft Access(TM), it would be very much appreciated if you could provide the book title or URL to point me in the right direction.

The more examples the better.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need to make your calls Async.

I've never seen any database programming books that cover this specific topic. You may want to start by looking for .NET books that cover multi-threaded programming in .NET. From my past experience, I remember it is a bit tricky.

Most books talk about how to do basic async execution from a button click this is fine but the trouble begins when you want to populate the UI with the results of an async db command. The .NET UI is NOT thread safe and you have to serialize everything to the UI thread when doing things like updating a datagrid control for example. If you stick with the data driven events you are OK but if you want to do things more complex it can get troublesome.

I remember doing this back in the old days (.NET 1.0 and 1.1 days) and I would end up with a dead datagrid control with a big red X on it when the grid control got out of sync. So what I finally did after much pain and suffering was write my own custom message passing system that would pass messages to background threads and queue responses back to UI thread, then final bit of data manipulation had to be done on the UI thread.

I remember even creating/manipulating a new datarow on a secondary thread would break the datagrid/dataset (note I would just call NewRow on background thread and then serialize the actual adding of the new row on primary UI thread). This stuff might be fixed in .NET 2.0, so maybe I am being overly cautious here.

Need Extra Rows

Here is the basic sql I am trying to implement:

If you notice for the most classids, the earliest dtmready is > today. What
I
need is to return an additional row when the earliest dtmready is after toda
y.
The desired rows would be:
A1 0 (today's date)
etc
Background: I am running SQL Server 2000 SP4 and the results of the query ar
e
returned to a Java program at a level where I do not have the ability to
create a new row. So, it would be ideal if I could create the sql that
returns a row with a dtmready of today with a count of 0 for each classid
that has a minimum dtmready > today.Hi
The easiest way to do this is to use a calendar table see
http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2519 then your query would be
SELECT v.classid, COUNT(u.classid) AS [COUNT], c.dt AS [dtmready]
FROM ( SELECT DISTINCT classid FROM unit WHERE rmpropid = '123' ) v
CROSS JOIN dbo.calendar c
LEFT JOIN Unit u ON c.dt = u.dtmready AND u.classid = v.classid AND
u.rmpropid = '123'
GROUP BY v.classid, c.dt
ORDER BY c.dt
The cross join will get all date and classid combinations.

a calendar table (at least in ant reasonable amount of time), so do you have
any other ideas on how this might be accomplished?

Need basic.

Hi All,

Can this be done and if so can you give a bullet list of the steps need to accomplish this.

I need to load a bunch of files into a stagging table. Need to loop through the files and load them.

Thanks,

Michael

Essentially you're looking at is the following:

1) A for each container using the for each file enumerator.

2) Within that, you'll need to assign the filepath to a variable

3) Within the container, create a dataflow task with a flatfile source and a sql server destination, mapping the columns.

4) dynamically change the connection string of the flatfile source (properties/expression)

Hope this helps

Thanks Rick,

That is a good start, I will see how far I can get.

Michael

Need basic technical MSDE information.

Hello, I'm looking for a technical faq for MSDE. I need to know the
essentials for, example, the number of simultaneous connections that MSDE
permits, etc.
Thanks

Need basic SQL query help

Trying to select unique records from a database. A combination of 2 variables make the record unique. Need to export all rows of the return. I have below rudimentary sql skills (select/where) and cannot figure this one out. The database has ~ 180k rows, of which there are only ~ 50k unique records.

The data is on a single table, 15 seperate columns. It is a table containing network router data. The existing table set up shows the historical progression of changes/updates to these routers. I am trying to determine the latest records of the routers in question. Since some of the IP addresses have been used multiple times (moved from site A to site B for example), there are multiple dupe records that I do not want.
The two fields I need to use to identify unique records are:
serial_IP and site_id
In addition to that, I would also like to know how to format "max date" query, so that I get the latest information. I can do that manually if I must via a sort when I export the data, but it would be nice to know how to do that in the future.

thanks

noclueAs those two columns make a unique key on the table, there is possibility of use of a DISTINCT keyword, such as

SELECT DISTINCT serial_IP, site_id FROM your_table;

However, regarding your next request (selecting records with the latest date), there's need to use a subquery:SELECT DISTINCT t.serial_IP, t.site_id
FROM your_table t
WHERE t.date_column = (SELECT max(t1.date_column)
FROM your_table t1
WHERE t1.serial_IP = t.serial_IP
AND t1.site_id = t.site_id
);The DISTINCT keyword might, or might not be needed in this case: if table has only one record per "date_column", you won't need that. If there are multiple records per every "date_column" value, you'll still need it to eliminate multiple records.

Need basic help with deployment

Hello

I feel like an idiot here, but I cannot figure out how to get Reporting Services to work outside of Visual Studio. I have everything installed (using SQL Server 2005 Express), I have a report, it deploys but when I go to view it, I'm asked for a username and password. I found out how to allow annymous login, but when I do that it says I do not have permissions to access the report on the localhost server.

I can view the report through Visual Studio just fine, but not outside of it.

How can I get it to just allow me to view the report without logging in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
-JimWell it turns out the problem was that my default browser is firefox, and so it would deploy and try to open it that way and it wouldnt work. If I open it in IE its just fine, go figure :-\sql

Need Basic Help

At my workplace our ERP software in on a VFP database. I have learned quite
a bit about extracting data with the select statements from the VFP
database. We are in the talks of converting the the SQL version of our ERP
and I have some very basic questions since I am extremely new to the SQL
world.
I have created executable forms in VFP that queries the VFP tables for
certain users. Can I continue to use these forms or do I need to go to
another software. Is my understanding correct that SQL cannot create forms
like the VFP does? If I can use the VFP interface what is the Select syntax
to access the SQL database from within the VFP interface?
The VFP looks like this: Select 'field names' from 'database name'!'table
name'
What would the SQL look like? I can use the Query Analyzer to do Select
statements but I would like to be able to query the SQL database from within
the VFP interface. Thanks for your help.Hi
You can use VFP as a front end.

You'll get much better help posting questions like this in a FoxPro
newsgroup. Many FoxPro developers use SQL Server as a back end for their
applications and have much experience with it. SQL Server is a database
only - it has no front end to produce forms.
You can use the exact same SQL commands that you use in Query Analyzer to
access SQL Server via SQL Pass-through. Please look at SQLConnect,
SQLStringConnect, and SQLExec in the VFP Help.

Need basic guidance on massive access to sql conversion

I have a rather daunting task ahead of me. I have ot take an access mdb and bring it into sql express. Converting the tables is not a biggie, but I have more than 2500 queries that need to be brought over. I have several questions.

1. In many places I use queries with parameters as views. For example I might have a query that takes a couple of parameters and then turn around write another query that uses the first query as a table. Is there a way to do parameterized views in Sql?

2. Does anyone know of a decent automated tool to do this? The upsizing wizard is useless and I tried teh sql migration assistant, and it doesn't convert queries that have parameters.

3. Has anyone done anything on this kind of scale before?

Thanks ... Ed

1. The closest to parameterized views is using Table Valued Functions. Check in Books Online about using TVFs.

2. No 'decent tools' known. Parameterized views can be 'troublesome'.

3. Yes, and it will take a lot of dilligent and concentrated effort.

and 4. Good Luck -because you WILL need it!

need advise of basic knowledge

I dont know where to put this thread, I just wanna ask a question..actually what is happen when subscription synchronized the publications among IIS process.. (SQLMobile)

could you guys give me a diagram/schema of it?

thanks before

What are you looking for?

If you want a detailed process regarding security and logins that get used using web synchronization, refer to this:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345212.aspx

If you have any other specific questions, please do post them.

|||

thanks for your reply Mahesh :)

I also curious about, when subscriber do data update on SQLMobile, and then use sync process, what is happen with the data on publisher?is it updated like the subscriber did or subscriber will change back the data to origin publisher's?I'm using merge replication

many many thanks..

|||

If the subscriber updates data and there are no conflicting publisher updates, the subscribers updates will be propagated to the publisher.

If there are conflicts (publisher and subscriber update the same row or same column -- depending on row or column tracking) there could be conflicts and one of them may lose. Also the winning row is governed by the type of article resolver you choose.

thx for ur info

I'll try it
